100 Years of Excellence: The Legacy of Jones Coaches Ltd

In 1914, Oliver Howe was the landlord of the Wheatsheaf Inn at Frome’s Hill as well as being in the business as a carrier, what is more a two-horsed carrier, running to Bromyard and Ledbury markets. He made the transition from horses to motors and became one of the early operators of market day buses in Herefordshire.

Percy Jones started working for Oliver and carried on the family business for many years. His first Herefordshire registered vehicle was almost certainly a Ford, but by August 1921 he was the proud owner of a Daimler bus. During the war, he ran 24 coaches back and forth to the ammunition factory at Rotherwas. Unfortunately, due to ill health, Percy had to decrease the fleet.

Percy left his son Philip and his wife Jan, one old 32 seater coach and a mini bus to build the business back up. From 1975 to 2017, Philip and Jan worked every hour of the day, increasing their fleet of coaches to 20. Cleaning old to look like new with eventually being able to reach their target and have State-of-the-Ark customised built coaches from Holland and Germany that were to become award-winning, unique spectacles in the UK and Europe.
